Born on 25th November 1926 in Banapur, Odisha. Ranganath studied in Banpur High School and P.M. Academy and later at Ravenshaw College and Allahabad University. On 18th September, 1950, he got enrolled as advocate of Orissa High Court, Cuttack where he practiced law until on 04.07.1969 when he was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court. On 16th January 1981, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. Elevated as Judge, Supreme Court on 15.3.1983 and Chief Justice of India on 06.10.1990.
